Aguirre was a palaeontologist who was closely linked to palaeontological research in Madrid, with a special focus on the Manzanares terraces.
He modernised Spanish palaeontology through internationalisation, interdisciplinarity, and dissemination.
He was a creator of scientific vocations, and he mentored several generations of geologists, biologists, and archaeologists, which has led the Spanish palaeontological school to be considered one of the leading research powers in these fields.
