Frequently Asked Questions
Is the same title obtained if I study at a conservatory or an authorized private center?
Yes. Authorized centers provide the same teachings as a conservatory. The denomination is different due to the ownership of the center, conservatory when it is public, authorized center when it is private.
How many hours a week do I have to be in the conservatory in the elementary teachings? And in the professionals?
In elementary education, the average number of weekly classes is 5 hours; in the professional ones it depends on the course and specialty, but the average is from 7 to 10 h.
Is there a way to reconcile music schedules with elementary, middle and high school?
The classes in the conservatories respect the schedules of the schools and institutes.
In addition, there is the integrated teaching model: music centers where primary and secondary education are taught:
- primary education and music: the Padre Antonio Soler Integrated Center in San Lorenzo de El Escorial;
- secondary education and music: Padre Antonio Soler Integrated Center and Federico Moreno Torroba Integrated Center in the district of Carabanchel, in Madrid.
Is there an age limit to study music?
Only, lower limit in elementary education: 8 years, although exceptions can be considered.
Does passing the entrance exam guarantee a place in a conservatory?
It is the essential step to opt for a place in a center, but, to be able to enroll in a conservatory or in an integrated center, you must be admitted. This depends on the offer of vacancies in the center and the place you occupy in the list of applicants who have passed the test.
I have heard of “integrated centers”. What are they?
They are centers where both general primary or secondary and baccalaureate education as well as elementary and professional music education are taught.
What services do conservatories have?
- Uninterrupted opening from 9:00 to 22:00.
- Comprehensive training: in addition to learning to play an instrument, you will acquire the necessary skills in musical language, harmony, music history, etc.
- In professional education you can choose in 5th and 6th for the different training profiles that are offered in the centers: instrument or voice, composition, early music or jazz.
- Individual instrument classes.
- Group practice with different groups: chamber music, orchestra, choir and band activities.
- Preparation for interpretation in public.
- Participation in concerts and collaboration with other institutions.
- Specific preparation for competitions and awards, including the Extraordinary Music and Dance Awards of the Community of Madrid.
- Courses with guest professors and exchanges with national and foreign centers.
- Instrument loan.
- Study booths.
- Professional, academic and pedagogical orientation.
I stopped studying music a long time ago and I would like to resume my studies now. Can I continue studies?
As long as you have not exhausted the established years of permanence in the teachings, yes.
You have to apply for admission at the center where your file is, the last one where you were enrolled, or at another of your choice through a transfer request. Admission will depend on the vacancies that remain unoccupied after the process of allocating vacancies to newly admitted students.
If I have not studied elementary music education, can I access professional education?
Yes. To access professional music education you must pass an entrance test with no more or no less requirements.
When you obtain the title of professional music education. Can I work on something related?
The title of professional music education qualifies you to work in music schools.
You will be able to work in companies that require services for musical or training activities as long as you meet the company's hiring requirements.
Is it necessary to obtain the title of professional music education to access higher music studies?
No. The requirements to access higher music studies are age (normally 18) and degree (bachelor's degree). To access, you must pass an access test.
In case of being in possession of the professional title, the average obtained in professional music education can be valued if you think it will raise your access qualification. It will represent 30% of your access qualification. The remaining 70% will be the mark obtained in the test.
I study at a municipal music school. Do these studies serve me to access a conservatory?
Access to artistic music education is possible by passing the entrance exam exclusively.
Unregulated music studies will help you access a course other than 1st year of elementary education, provided you pass the corresponding entrance test. The course will depend on the level you have.
Can you study two instruments at the same time?
Yes, as long as the center where you study considers that your qualities and application will allow you to take advantage of the two specialties (instruments) and pass the entrance exam for each speciality.
I passed the entrance exam last year but they didn't give me a place. Is the grade worth it for this course?
The validity of the test is only for the course in which it is carried out.
In addition to tuition, what other expenses does studying music entail?
In addition to expenses for school supplies (stationery, sheet music, music books, etc.), transportation or clothing (for auditions and the orchestra, for example), the main expense is the purchase of the instrument, its maintenance and the rest of the material necessary for play it (bows, mouthpieces, reeds, rosin, case etc.).
Conservatories have an instrument loan service that you can use, although soon you will want to own your own instrument.
Are there scholarships to help me meet the cost of tuition?
The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport annually announces scholarships of a general nature for students who are pursuing post-compulsory studies, among which are professional and higher artistic education. (Link to the ministry's student aid and scholarships page: http://www.mecd.gob.es/educacion-mecd/areas-educacion/estudiantes/portada.html)
At what age can I start professional singing lessons?
Formally, from the age of 12, although the appropriate age depends on the stage of development of each person, and it is advisable to start singing studies when the voice has already “changed”.
I have seen that French, English, Italian and German classes are taught in the singing specialty. Will I learn to speak those languages?
No. They are language classes applied to singing, to learn the phonetics and the difficulties of projection and vocalization in each language and the corresponding lyrical repertoire.
I would like to study with a certain instrument teacher. How can I enroll in your class?
You must take the test at the conservatory where that teacher teaches. Once you have passed the test and been admitted to the center, you must ask the center's management to be included among that teacher's students. They will attend to your request whenever possible.
