La Virtual Library of the Community of Madrid (BVCM) is a repository that allows the consult, read or download of the digital versions of the edited works, in any of the electronic file formats of the online publications: PDF, EPUB, ZIP, ISO, Mobile Application or WEB.
These works can be read or downloaded directly by clicking on See publication, both in the search results of PublicaMadrid as in the complete catalog file of the work.
PublicaMadrid contains a semantic search engine, in which it is not necessary to indicate the exact term searched for, since it allows the results to be classified by significant categories (subjects, labels, digital, availability, supports, collections, authors, organizations, type of fund, year of publication... ), and refine the search. As selected, filters are displayed (and removed) in the header. It also offers the word suggestion functionality, since the titles of the already indexed contents are offered
Every post counts in your catalog file with a series of descriptive fields that facilitate searches and that in some cases are also hyperlinks: reference, title, Author, promoter/co-editor, collection, support, format, year of publication, ISBN, ISSN, legal deposit, pages, type of fund, distribution, extract, origin promoter, metadata, in addition to the image of the cover or cover and, usually, the link See publication to the version of the Virtual Library, for consultation, reading or download.
What is the Virtual Library of PublicaMadrid
It brings together digital works in various formats, which can come either from digitally born works or derived digital works.
Digital collection of the Community of Madrid publishing house
PublicaMadrid's Virtual Library includes the digital collection of the Comunidad de Madrid publishing house, in which frequently the edition in physical support is accompanied by the publication of the digital version, so that the distribution of physical copies is simultaneous with digital distribution, to reach the widest possible audience.
At the moment the titles with a retail price do not have complete digital versions, only a selection or sample, as a promotional element.
Since the approval of Code of ethics for senior managers, in the Community of Madrid, the digital edition of publications has been prioritized even more, although in justified cases a circulation in physical media, such as books or paper brochures, is also added.
Origin and funds
The Virtual Library contains digitized funds of works published by all the organizations of the Community of Madrid since its creation and also some previous ones, coming from the Provincial Council.
The Virtual Library of the Community of Madrid was discharged as digital collection in the directory of Hispanic in 2005, where it is defined as follows: «Virtual consultation and reading space within the institutional portal madrid.org, which brings together a set of publications, in electronic online publication format and in a wide variety of formats, with digital versions of the printed or directly digital works published by the different Ministries and organizations of the Community of Madrid and that reflects its editorial lines from 1983 to the present. The Virtual Library is part of the PublicaMadrid online catalogue, which includes all the works».
Original media and derived media
Traditionally, publications were published only in tangible media, physical, and consisted of runs of copies that were distributed in various physical ways as well. They were books or pamphlets on paper, to which disks (CD-ROM, DVD) and USB were added later.
However, these original supports could be digitized or already made with digital files, so they could also be disseminated online in the form of derivative digital versions of the original support. Those digitized files were the origin, as publisher's library, Virtual Library of the Community of Madrid.
This collection complements the Digital Library of the Community of Madrid, which brings together significant works on Madrid themes from all kinds of publishers
Currently, most of the original media for publishing publications are digital, the so-called online publications according regulations in force.
The first digital versions were always in the PDF file format, but today there are a wide variety of online publication formats.
online publications
The group of born digital works, soon to be the most numerous, are called online publications because of the way they spread: online, usually on the Internet. They are always electronic files with different types of file extension, which are the formats: EPUB, PDF, ISO, ZIP... Many are files created specifically for downloading, which allow offline reading.
But there are also others, which we can call online publications in WEB format, which have been created for consultation via connection, without downloading (although this is possible in parts).
The legislator now prefers not to use the old expression of "electronic publications", because it is misleading, by confusing the nature of the work (always digital) with the dissemination or distribution mechanism (online, but also on physical support), since that this definition includes both web publications and electronic book files as well as encyclopedias distributed on DVD.
Out-of-print copies and derivative digital versions
The other large group of works included in the Virtual Library is made up of the derivative digital versions of works published in original physical or tangible media, such as a book or brochure on paper, disk or USB memory. These works were not originally online publications, since they were edited with a throw of physical copies that may or may not have been fully distributed, so there may be copies available or with out of print copies. However, the existence of a digital version of the work allows another channel for its dissemination, online publication on web portals, and a second life for the work when copies are sold out.
Digital formats of online publications
The .PDF format is the oldest among the digital ones and corresponds to a standard adopted to preserve digital versions of books and pamphlets on paper, that is, of works published on original non-digital supports.
The format preserves the form of the work, its layout, but it is difficult to read on small or medium-sized screens.
It expressly allows the online download of the file and facilitates offline reading, through any application or reading program, of the many that exist. Some browsers directly open PDF files and allow direct reading.
ZIP is a format of lossless data compression quality, which allows you to group several files into one and reduce the size of the file, to facilitate its dissemination and storage.
In PublicaMadrid there are publications whose digital version is a ZIP that compiles various PDF or mobile application files.
It expressly allows online downloading of the file and facilitates offline reading.
The ISO format is a disk image, which can include files of a wide variety of file types: text, image, video, audio, executable... that are originally recorded on a physical disk.
It expressly allows the online download of the file and facilitates offline reading, through an application or program that is capable of creating a virtual unit that simulates the physical disk, or by recording a true physical disk, a copy of the digitized original.
EPUB is the quintessential digital literary publishing format, a open standard agreed by the publishing industry, so that it can be read on most digital reading devices, be they electronic ink readers or mobile phones or tablets, as well as desktop computers.
It expressly allows online downloading of the file and facilitates offline reading:. «How to open and read the ePub format».
digital format ePub it is a standard for the edition of digital publications, like the pdf, but unlike this one, it allows the text to be outlined and flow, adapting to any screen size and facilitating a more comfortable reading. It is the most common format used by digital publishers for the publication of electronic books (e-books).
To read the EPUB format, we must access the file from a reading device, which is the one that conditions the way of reading. For Android the free ones can be recommended FBReader (configuration in spanish), Google Play Books, Moon + Reader, Periodically o eBiblio. In Apple iOS the most widespread is iBooks, although there is also a version of FBReader.

You can also read ePub2 or ePub3 with your browser by installing the Chrome extension Readium o EPUB Reader. The Firefox browser also allows you to install a plug-in for this function, EPUB Reader. They expressly allow the file to be downloaded online, both from PublicaMadrid and from virtual stores, and facilitate offline reading.
