Castle of Manzanares El Real

The history and image of Manzanares El Real will always be linked to the Mendozas and their unmistakable castle, one of the "jewels" not only of Madrid's military architecture but of all the medieval architecture of the Kingdom of Castile.
A Little History
It is the most emblematic and best preserved in the Madrid region. The construction was started by the XNUMXst Duke of the Infantado, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza in the XNUMXth century and was completed by his son, Íñigo López de Mendoza, who brought in the architect Juan Guas, one of the greatest representatives of late Gothic in Castile and architect of the Kings Catholics.
This building is the architectural expression of a society straddling two eras, the medieval chivalric one with its defensive elements such as the wall or the elbowed entrance, and the humanist Renaissance one with its large halls, decorated facades and magnificent viewpoints, more typical of a palace. .
The recent restoration of the landscape surrounding the castle has created a space that brings together different aspects of life at the end of the XNUMXth century. All plants and materials used in this space have been selected from existing historical documentation.
There is an orchard of medicinal and industrial plants, crops and orchards with cereals, vines, vegetables and fruits. The landscaped spaces were also gaming venues and tournament venues. The castle garden has a labyrinth and a palenque, the space in which some activities are currently carried out that recreate the jousts and games of yesteryear.
