A doctor from Marañon, elected president of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry

CELSO ARANGO IS CHIEF OF CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY

Celso Arango, head of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service at Hospital Gregorio Marañón, has been elected president-elect of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry. This institution is in charge of promoting the study and development of Psychiatry as well as its scientific and research progress in Spain. The Child Psychiatry Service, which Arango directs, has obtained the Award for Excellence in Public Management, awarded by the Ministry of Finance, and the +500 certification of the EFQM quality system.

The head of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service of the General University Hospital Gregorio Marañón, Celso Arango, has been elected president-elect of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry (SEP). This society brings together psychiatrists from all over the country and is responsible for promoting the study and development of psychiatry as well as its scientific and technical progress, care, teaching and research in Spain.

Likewise, the SEP seeks to promote information and psychiatric training for general practitioners and participate in the training of specialists, contribute with research and advice to solve the problems of psychiatric care in Spain, and represent psychiatrists Spaniards in international institutions, organizations and societies.

Precisely in this area, it should be noted that Celso Arango is also the president of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the most influential scientific society in Europe in the field of neuroscience. Arango is the first Spaniard to be president of this society that brings together researchers and care managers in psychiatry, neurology or neuroscience.

The head of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service of the Gregorio Maranon Hospital, Celso Arango, is a Doctor of Medicine and specialist in Legal Psychiatry from the Complutense University of Madrid, full professor of Psychiatry at said university, professor of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine of the University of Maryland (USA) and professor of Psychiatry at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF), also in the USA. He has edited eight books and 44 book chapters, and is the author of 323 scientific articles. He is also scientific director of the Mental Health Network Biomedical Research Center (CIBERSAM).

Quality recognition

El Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service Unit Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón provides comprehensive care to children and adolescents and their families. This comprehensive care falls under four main axes: the Brief Hospitalization Unit, specific outpatient care programs, general outpatient care consultations at the mental health centers of Moratalaz and Retiro, and the liaison psychiatry program at the Maternity Hospital. The Service also develops six strategic lines: advancing in the development of the organizational and management system to improve work systems; improve the quality of care and patient safety; improve the continuity of care and coordination and satisfaction of the different resources available to the service; improve the job satisfaction of workers; develop and standardize specific programs; and promote the teaching and research program.

At the head of the Child Psychiatry Service, Celso Arango has managed to make it the first medical service in the country to have more than 500 points in the EFQM comprehensive quality evaluation. In addition, this year he has received the award for Excellence in Clinical Management from the Ministry of Finance, which adds to the more than fifteen awards received for management quality.
