Public transportation of excellence
Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM – Regional Transportation Consortium of Madrid)
The Regional Transportation Consortium of Madrid as the region’s Public Transportation Authority
The public transport system of the Community of Madrid has a wide range of services. In 2023, the production of services for all modes of transport stood at 349,3 million rail car-km and 286,4 million road car-km, on a network of just over 11.000 km that serves all municipalities in the region.
This entire system has facilitated 1.607,3 million passenger journeys, 81,3% of which are made with the Transport Pass. This represents more than 5,3 million active personal Public Transport Cards (9 cards for every 10 residents in the Community of Madrid), to which must be added almost 23 million Multis (non-personal Public Transport Cards).
Why is it excellent?
The Community of Madrid has one of the best public transport systems in the world, which is a reference and example for other countries. In fact, nearly 30 delegations from other countries have visited the CRTM during 2023.
As the Public Transport Authority of the region, it brings together the powers of this and all the Town Councils of the Community in matters of regular public transport of passengers, assuming the integrated management of the public transport system in said territory in which more than 5 million trips are made daily.
Its main objectives and functions make it possible to deliver a more efficient, less polluting and good quality service to citizens.
Through the Centro de Innovación y Gestión del Transporte Público (CITRAM – Public Transportation Innovation and Management Centre) The Madrid Regional Transport Consortium supervises in real time the operation of all modes of transport (Metro, Light Rail, urban and interurban buses, and commuter trains) that operate in the Community of Madrid. Its main mission is to provide integrated service information to citizens who, for the most part, make multimodal trips. This allows Madrid residents to dynamically optimise their daily journeys. To do this, it works in permanent coordination with the 40 public and private operators that make up the region's transport system.
The CRTM is carrying out important work in collaboration with public and private entities in the field of research, development and innovation to launch projects with European funding, including SCALE-UP and SUNRISE.
