New Arganzuela-Planetario station
Here you will find information, graphic documentation, photographs, etc. of this work.
Commissioning: January 26, 2.007
It is located on Line 6, in the Arganzuela district, south of Madrid. The work limits to the north with c/Párroco Eusebio Cuenca, to the south with the new layout (extension) of c/Antracita, to the east with Parque Tierno Galván and to the west with c/Bronce. Part of the project is the construction of two complementary ventilation shafts between the Legazpi station and the new Arganzuela-Planetario station and between the Méndez Álvaro station and the Arganzuela-Planetario station.
Also part of the area called the station is a depot or siding for the incorporation or withdrawal of trains according to the needs of the service, as well as a workshop at the level of the tracks. In the future, on this level, and above street level, a Metro command post will be built.
Context of the surrounding urban fabric
Within Line 6, the section between the Legazpi and Méndez Álvaro stations is longer than usual for Metro de Madrid and is located below an area that, at the time of construction of Line 6, was occupied by a car park.

As of the “Pasillo Verde” operation in 1995, the reclassification of industrial land to residential land in the area where the station is located was ordered. As of this operation, a ten-year moratorium was given to the companies that existed in the Legazpi industrial estate for their transfer.
With the completion of the Vía Verde, part of these areas became buildable, and the rest, as well as uninhabited sections, were incorporated into the Tierno Galván Park, where various recreational facilities have been built, such as the Planetarium and the IMAX cinema. The construction of numerous housing developments caused a significant increase in the population, which became residential and made up of young families.
The construction of the new Arganzuela-Planetario station constitutes a clear improvement in the functionality of Line 6. This possibility had already been contemplated in the original project, in which an area with a horizontal grade had been established, prepared for the construction of a back station.
The district has been equipped with basic facilities such as schools, health centers and a sports center. In addition, next to the station, in c/Bronce, the works of a new school, the CPTirso de Molina, have already been carried out.

geometric characteristics
The new Arganzuela-Planetario station is an underground structure with the rail level at a depth of 22 m from the street surface. The enclosure of screens has a variable length between interior faces from 180 to 183 m, and an equally variable width from 13 to 51 m.
The lobby area is located practically 1/3 of the total development of the station on its west side.
A substation with an occupation length of 45 m and a width of 16 m is also included.
The hall level is located at a structural level of 581,61, the mezzanine at a level of 537,50, and the platform finish level at a level of 565,33.
Description of the works
The works include the station and 4 siding tracks and have had an execution period of 27 months.
The station is delimited by an enclosure of reinforced concrete screens that define the geometric outline of the station. The depth of these screens is 30 m and 1 m thick.
Inside this enclosure, the 4 levels that make up the station are developed: lobby, mezzanine 1, mezzanine 2 and platforms. As the earth that has been confined inside the shielded enclosure is being excavated, the corresponding reinforced concrete slabs are made for the different floors.
The first level is the one corresponding to the lobby. Below this is mezzanine 2, which allows access to the lowest level, which is the platform level.
The slab of mezzanine 2 serves as an intermediate passage for the public to access the platform from the lobby. This slab is extended for the construction of the electrical substation cable plant, which is located on mezzanine 1. Mezzanine 1 does not have public access, being for the exclusive use of Metro personnel.
On the lowest level, in addition to the platforms, there are depots for Metro rolling stock, for which the corresponding track and catenary works are carried out.
The extraction of materials from the excavation inside the enclosure is carried out by two lateral ramps made between piles.
These ramps are progressively excavated as the level of excavation inside the station is lowered.
When the excavation was close to the existing Metro tunnel in service (Line 6). The line was cut in order to demolish the segments of the tunnel and continue with the excavation.
Before beginning the work during the cut of the line, in the days prior to the suspension of the service, everything that could be done without affecting the Metro service was executed; For this, the maximum emptying of the station was carried out in order to reduce the execution period in the cut-off dates.
text
The emptying was carried out in two phases (see sketch 1):
- Phase 1: It is carried out before the cut of the metro line, it includes zones 1,2, 3 and XNUMX.
- Phase 2: It is carried out during the cut of the metro line and includes zones 4 and 5 and the demolition of the width and voussoirs.
Once the tunnel voussoirs had been demolished and the ground had been excavated, the counter-vault that served as support for the track and the execution of the station platforms were poured. The track was then restored, giving service to the Metro line. These line cutting works were carried out in a period of less than two months.
Once the slabs had been executed, and trains were already circulating, the masonry and installation phase was carried out, which will make it possible to create each of the dependencies and entrances required by a Metro station.
construction methods
The construction methods for the realization of the new station can be divided into:
Station construction activities, including demolition of the existing tunnel
The station has been made using the system Cut-and-cover, namely:
- Execution of reinforced concrete screens.
- Realization of a roof supported on the ground and replacement of the urbanization (including the tourist railway line).
- Excavation and realization of vestibule.
- Excavation and construction of mezzanines.
- Excavation up to the tunnel segments and controlled demolition of the tunnel segments in 24-hour shifts (during the line cut).
- Execution of counter vault in 24-hour shifts in the station area (during the line cut).
- Replacement of the line track and catenary in the station area (during the cut).
- Realization of platforms, stairs, masonry and installations.

Ventilation shaft construction activities
The procedure basically consists of:
- A perimeter of pile walls (Well).
- Stampers with periodic spacing, carried out as the excavation is carried out.
- Underground tunnel made by the Madrid Method until reaching the current line (Gallery).
- Realization of the reinforcement of the union and demolition of the voussoirs of the existing tunnel.

Work after the execution of the work

Geology and geotechnics
From a geological point of view, the Arganzuela-Planetario station is located within the Tajo Basin, also known as the Madrid Basin. This is a Tertiary Miocene basin where we can find, from wall to ceiling, the following lithologies:
- On the wall we find some gypsum facies with a prograding character that as we climb stratigraphically go from being massive to fibrous, with centimeter thicknesses.
- Above, and discordant with the previous facies, we find other carbonate and silicified ones, which may or may not appear depending on the areas, which at the top pass into greenish-colored clays and marls, more or less plastic depending on the depth and which are commonly called "peñuelas".
- Finally, at the top, we find anthropic fills with different thicknesses, the result of urban development or industrial actions.
