Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2023

Spain has assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the second semester of 2023, from July 1 to December 31.

La Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union has established four priorities:

  • reindustrialize the European Union and guarantee its open strategic autonomy
  • advance the ecological transition and environmental adaptation
  • push for greater social and economic justice
  • strengthen European unity.

It will be the fifth Spanish Presidency since joining the EU in 1986. The current Presidency represents the Council in its relations with other European Union institutions, including the European Commission and the European Parliament.

During the semester of the Presidency, Spain will organize 23 informal meetings of ministers in 21 cities spread throughout the national geography, in addition to the Conference of Presidents of Parliament, a trip by the College of Commissioners to Madrid and an informal meeting of heads of State or of Government that will take place in Granada in October.

For those who do not know what the Council Presidency, this is assumed, by turns of six months, the member states of the EU.

The Member States that hold the Presidency collaborate in groups of three, known as "Trios", currently made up of the Spanish, Belgian and Hungarian Presidencies.

The Presidency has two main tasks:

-Plan and chair the sessions of the Council and the meetings of its preparatory bodies.

-Represent the Council in relations with other EU institutions.
