European benchmark in paediatric transplantation
TransplantChild, European Reference Network in Pediatric Transplantation, coordinated by the Hospital Universitario La Paz
The Hospital Universitario La Paz is in charge of coordinating the European Reference Network for Paediatric Transplantation
The Hospital Universitario La Paz coordinates TransplantChild, the European Reference Network in Paediatric Transplantation, thus leading the only European Reference Network coordinated by Spain.
The TransplantChild Network is coordinated by Dr. Paloma Jara and it is comprised of 18 hospitals in 11 countries: Germany, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Holland, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Sweden, as well as Spain.
This network works in the field of paediatric solid organ transplantation and hematopoietic stem cell transplants, by applying a cross-cutting patient-centric approach. It addresses the entire transplant process: pre-transplant, transplant, and post-transplant and focuses on issues that are critical to the child, such as dealing with a chronic condition and preventing secondary diseases associated to the transplant. It is staffed by highly-qualified multidisciplinary teams that are strongly committed to improving the quality of life of the patients and their families, as well as to research and the dissemination of knowledge.
Why is it excellent?
The Hospital Universitario La Paz is staffed by one of the most specialised multidisciplinary transplant teams in Europe, and it is the only accredited centre in Spain to perform all kinds of paediatric transplants (Transplantation Programme). Between January XNUMX and December XNUMX, a total of XNUMX solid organ transplants and hematopoietic stem cell transplants were performed, with survival and quality indicators comparable to the results obtained by the best hospitals worldwide
TransplantChild is a research and collaboration network that generates top-notch knowledge about transplant-related diseases, and conducts projects at European level aimed at identifying, validating, standardising and clinically applying bio-markers; or at transplant immunotherapy which, even if already performed on adults, still requires validation for infant patients.
In order to be included in the European Reference Networks (ERN) , which were created upon the mandate of the European Commission, the centre must be endorsed by the body responsible for its governance, meet excellence criteria in specific areas and have a qualified team of professionals in place.
