The altruistic donation
-
The donation allows to increase the hope and quality of life of patients with life-threatening disorders, as well as to carry out complex medical and surgical procedures.
Currently there are thousands of people who, in order to continue living or improve their quality of life, need a blood transfusion (in its different components) or a transplant of hematopoietic progenitors from bone marrow or umbilical cord blood.
-
- Blood donation: Blood is essential to live. Its role is so essential that the decrease in its volume or the alteration of any of its functions can endanger the survival of the organism. Donating blood, a generous and selfless gesture, is today the only way to save life or restore health for anyone who suffers from a deficiency of blood components.
- Selective donation or apheresis: Automated blood drawing, or apheresis, is a special type of donation that allows a person to selectively donate a portion of the blood components, such as red blood cells, platelets, or plasma. The blood derivatives resulting from apheresis are intended for patients with cancer, leukemia, aplastic anemia, organ transplants and, frequently, for patients receiving treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The most frequent donation by apheresis is that of platelets. Using this technique, a single donation yields a number of platelets equivalent to that obtained from five whole blood donations. In addition, as it comes from a single donor, a higher quality and transfusion safety is guaranteed.
- bone marrow donation, or technically expressed from hematopoietic progenitors, is one of the donation possibilities that we can make while alive. The bone marrow transplant is the only hope of life for people with certain blood diseases such as leukemia or lymphomas.
- Umbilical cord blood donation: The transplantation of hematopoietic progenitors incorporated the umbilical cord blood of newborns a few years ago as one of the sources from which these progenitors could be extracted. Umbilical cord blood donation consists of collecting blood from the placenta, after delivery and before delivery.

WORLD BONE MARROW DONOR DAY 2022
World Bone Marrow Donor Day was celebrated, as always, with the exception of 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, with an act of thanks to marrow donors and entities that collaborate in this type of donation.
In the Community of Madrid there are almost 3.000 people who have registered until August 31, 2022. To them, to all those who have already come to donate when they have been called and to all the people and entities that collaborate to make larger this family, this Marrow Team:
THANK YOU!!!!
World Blood Donor Day 2021
-
In 2021, the traditional act of gratitude to donors could already be held on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, although complying with the capacity restriction measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Transfusion Center dedicated it to the people of Madrid who have made almost 100.000 donations throughout this year, despite the COVID-19 pandemic or the Filomena snowstorm. Thanks to this, the needs of around 18.000 patients could be covered. "So that the heart of Madrid does not stop lait. Donate blood" was the motto this year..
As for platelet donations by apheresis, used for specific patients and especially cancer patients, 1.334 have been made. There have been 1.012 donations of hyperimmune plasma, of which 2.132 units have been obtained and 400 Covid-19 patients have been transfused.
"Thank you for being there" donors, donation staff, media and network followers. Without you it would not have been possible.
World Bone Marrow Donor Day 2021
"I support saving lives. I am Equipo Médula"
-
On September 18, the Transfusion Center held an act of gratitude to the donors on the occasion of the World Bone Marrow Donor Day and Umbilical Cord Blood. The COVID19 pandemic did not prevent Madrid from meeting the goal set by the National Bone Marrow Plan for 2020, with 5.834 new people registered. Regarding effective donations, 56 people donated bone marrow in the Community of Madrid during 2020, which represents 25% of the total donations made nationwide (2020). With this data, Madrid leads the donation of bone marrow.
In total, as of December 2020, the Madrid registry had 56.090 registered donors. In 2021 until August 31, another 2.955 new donors have been incorporated, which represents 52% of the objective set for the year 2021. In effective donations, between January and August, 39 donations have been made in the Community of Madrid, national total (176), representing 22% of the total.

ACT OF THANKS
We were finally able to recover the act of gratitude that we traditionally celebrate at the Transfusion Center and that in 2020 was not possible due to the pandemic. Many of the people who have donated effective marrow in the last year were present. In 2020 there were 56 and 39 in 2021. Also collaborators such as the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation, United for the Marrow or the Bripac of Madrid.
