In the Middle Ages, Villarejo was Encomienda Mayor de Castilla, of the Military Order of Santiago, and its relevance as head of territory at that time, attest to the castle and the House of the Tercia. Both, together with the Church of San Andrés Apóstol and the Fortress of the Military Order of Santiago, they were declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1974 and, subsequently, in 1992, the walled enclosure and the Tercia, were declared a Site of Cultural Interest, with an Area category. Its castle, or rather its keep, is the most recognisable landmark of the municipal area due to its one-of-a-kind characteristics.
In the field of sweets, the well-known and true gastronomic heritage of the municipality are: “Aunt Javiera’s donuts”, a resident of Villarejo who made famous the ones that are now called “Santa Clara doughnuts” and which are consumed, along with the silly ones, the smart ones and the French ones, during the San Isidro festivities.
