A late Roman well in Móstoles
Description of the deposit
The excavation took place on a site in the center of Móstoles, on Calle Nueva, between Calle Ricardo Medem and Calle Rejilla. Excavation began with the completion of eight mechanical soundings. On the edge of one of them a dark stain was observed, which was identified as the filling of a negative structure surrounded by post holes, which turned out to be a well from a late Roman period.
It was excavated to a depth of 3,5 m, with the lower levels, from -2,5 m, containing the greatest amount of pottery and bones. Inside the well, a contemporary concrete shaft appeared, along with layers of abundant organic material that contained a large number of tiles (imams), late-Roman ceramics from the end of the fourth century to the middle of the fifth century, along with some high-imperial ceramics from the XNUMXst and XNUMXnd centuries.
The time of the construction of the structure is unknown, although there are data such as the oblong shape that seem to indicate that it was not a simple domestic well, but rather more complex. There are parallels that indicate the possibility that it is a well with a ferris wheel, of the type of chain with buckets, which was used extensively, for example, in Roman London.
