Industrial production center in the Loranca field
A Roman pottery production center
Description of the deposit
Within the archaeological excavations carried out at the Loranca site, an area dedicated to industrial activities was identified, where seven furnaces of Roman chronology were identified.
In various archaeological activities in the Community of Madrid, the existence of multiple ceramic workshops from all periods and in particular of Roman and late ancient chronology has been recorded in recent years, which are attesting that during these periods an intense pottery activity developed in the rural zones.
Of the seven excavated kilns, three of them must have been lime kilns or mixed brick and lime kilns, since both materials are documented in the silting levels. They are circular or oval chamber furnaces, with a praefurnium of large dimensions. In these ovens, no indication of the existence of a grill was found, as befits the type of lime kilns, or refractory linings on its walls. They are dated in the first half of the XNUMXth century after Christ.
Two other kilns are rectangular in plan and given their level of leveling, it has not been possible to clearly document their dedication to the firing of construction or ceramic materials, as no testar has been found associated with them. The central pilaster at the bottom of the cooking chamber of these ovens is a technical novelty and possibly a feature of the Madrid area. A chronology of the second half of the XNUMXth century AD is attributed to them. C.
The two remaining kilns have similar characteristics and were quite far from the other five. They have circular combustion chambers, excavated in the geological terrain and lined with adobes. At the bottom of the chamber they have a central corridor, like a nozzle, in the shape of a Latin cross plan. None of them kept the grill. The praefurnium It was built with adobes and covered with a vault by the approach of courses, of which part of the walls was preserved and the access arch to the chamber was almost complete. As for its functionality, it seems that they were mainly dedicated to the firing of materials. construction (bricks). Both are credited with a chronology of the first and second quarter of the fifth century AD.
