
This is how they were...European Heritage Days 2018: the art of sharing
Made in collaboration with the municipalities of the Sierra Norte
It was an awareness program on the cultural richness and diversity of Europe, organized by the Council of Europe. The Conference was held simultaneously in many countries and regions, with the aim of making citizens aware of their heritage.
El art of sharing was the motto around which the Conference revolved in 2018. The objective was to deepen the transnational nature of heritage and promote the collaboration of all agents involved in the conservation and dissemination of cultural heritage in Europe. The Conference focused on citizen participation and the promotion of local communities.
Within the framework of the conference, the cultural heritage they house was made known 18 municipalities of the Sierra Norte de Madrid, rich both for the diversity of its typologies and for its historical-artistic importance, all in an area in which the natural environment takes on special importance.
Between September 1 and October 28, 2018 a total of 19 activities for which more than 1.000 places. All activities were free and required prior registration.
The activities included in the program covered numerous heritage typologies:
- Ecclesiastical heritage: church of San Vicente Mártir (Braojos), church of Santo Domingo de Silos (Prádena del Rincón), the Monastery of Santa María de El Paular (Rascafría) or the Convent of San Antonio (La Cabrera).
- Ethnographic heritage: Ethnological Museum (Horcajuelo de la Sierra), Water Museum and Stonework Museum (El Berrrueco), old forges or haystacks (El Cuadrón), coal bunkers, apiaries or mills (La Hiruela).
- Intangible heritage: agricultural and livestock activities (El Berrueco), traditional management in the Villar stream (Lozoya), old trades (Pinilla de Buitrago), traditional uses (Montejo de la Sierra) and emotional map (Villavieja del Lozoya).
- They were also made guided tours Through the historic center, the cultural and natural heritage of several municipalities (Torrelaguna, Navalafuente and Navarredonda and San Mamés), the Valle de los Sueños sculptural complex (Puebla de la Sierra) was visited, the castle of the Mendoza family (Buitrago del Lozoya) and it was possible to participate in the III Photography Contest of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park.

Guided visit to the monastic area of the Monastery of Santa María de El Paular
During the tour, stops were made where the older people of the town told what life was like in different points of the itinerary: forge, laundry, bread oven, large house, Mudéjar Arch and Herrar Potro. The visitors learned, through their narration, the emotions that were woven in these key places, until a few years ago, in the life of the municipality.

Monumental guided tours in Buitrago de Lozoya
During the guided tour, the attendees went up to the high adarve of the wall to visit the exhibition of siege machines and medieval weapons, they accessed the Church of Santa María del Castillo and saw the exteriors of the Castillo de la Familia Mendoza, among other monuments and outstanding attractions of the town.

The trades of life (La Hiruela)
A 2,7 km guided tour of the Hiruela was carried out, through one of the most original municipalities in the Community of Madrid. The path discovered the main traditional trades typical of mountain areas like this one. You could see the reconstruction of a coal mine, a centenary apiary and the flour mill (today restored and in operation).

Guided path through the meadow of El Berrueco
Guided and interpreted tour in which the boyal pasture of El Berrueco was surrounded, enjoying magnificent views and discovering its biodiversity. This pasture is a magnificent example, both for its beauty and its state of conservation, of a formation resulting from agrosilvopastoral activities.

The Serrana Traditional House and the Craft of the Forge (Horcajuelo de la Sierra)
The Ethnological Museum of Horcajuelo de la Sierra was visited, located in a restored traditional house faithfully following the guidelines established by the mountain architecture of this area: slate masonry walls, small windows, walls made with mud and straw, covered with curved tiles. Arabic ... Later, an old restored forge was accessed.

Cultural and Natural Heritage Route of La Cabrera
For the guided tour through the cultural and natural heritage of the municipality, two routes were carried out.
Route 1 went through the San Antonio Convent, the Visigoth Castro and the Visigoth Tombs.
Route 2 was in the Dehesa de Roblellano and its natural environment with the colors of autumn.

Guided tour of the Hayedo de Montejo, Natural Heritage of Humanity under the theme "Historical uses of the Hayedo de Montejo"
A tour of approximately 3 km was made through the interior of the Hayedo (Senda del Mirador) where the history and the ancient uses that once took place within this forest were discovered and that decades later, vestiges of these uses still remain, their own of the traditional culture of the Sierra del Rincón.
It was organized by the Information Center of the Sierra del Rincón Biosphere Reserve.
A historical discovery in Prádena del Rincón
During the interpreted visit, the latest findings discovered by a scientific team made up of architects, archaeologists, historians, restorers, anthropologists, art specialists, etc. were announced. They saw the interior of the Church of Santo Domingo de Silos, the medieval necropolis and one of the largest and best bell casting workshops in Spain.

Museum of Water and Museum of Stonemasonry (El Berrueco)
A tour was made through the history of drinking water supply in Madrid through several models and a walk through the town of El Berrueco to learn about its traditions and architecture while admiring stone elements carved by the stonemasons of the municipality.
It was organized by the Atazar Reservoir Association.
Contemporary art and Singular Trees (Puebla de la Sierra)
During a route of low difficulty, the artistic heritage of the municipality was made known: the sculptural complex "Valley of Dreams", the collection of engravings and the living monuments that represent Singular Trees.

Guided visit to Torrelaguna
An exterior tour was made through the historic center of Torrelaguna, starting the visit in the Plaza Mayor, with a brief historical introduction. It was possible to see the exterior of the most important buildings in this town, the old granary, the Franciscan convent, the Church of Santa María Magdalena, the old corn Exchange, manor houses, the remains of the wall and the old hospital.

Guided visit to the Church of San Vicente (Braojos)
The guided visit to the Church of San Vicente Mártir, known as the Cathedral of the Sierra Norte, and more than 400 years old, surprised by its architectural level and the artistic jewels it contains. Its current tower was originally a defensive tower from the XIV-XV centuries, from where you can see the existing views. Inside it houses important jewels of sculpture and painting, since it had two great artists of the time: the sculptor Gregorio Fernández, married to a neighbor from Braojos, and the painter Vicente Carduccio.

Tourism at your own pace: Walking through the memories of Pinilla (Garganta de los Montes)
The people of Pinilla de Buitrago shared their experiences around its rich architectural heritage, such as the trades in which they worked or the fountains where they drank water. They were invited to discover those places that gave so much to talk about, through this activity designed in the form of a self-guided game. Once the game was completed, the participants received a gift at the El Cuadrón Environmental Education Center.

The enigma of the stones of El Cuadrón (Garganta de los Montes)
The activity was designed in the form of a self-guided game in which visitors had to follow a series of tracks to discover the eco-cultural heritage of the small mountain town of El Cuadrón. Along the way they had to find the old forge, the courts, the haystacks and solve the enigma of the stones of the Lozoya Valley. Once the game was completed, the participants received a gift at the El Cuadrón Environmental Education Center.

Guided path through the Arroyo del Villar (Lozoya)
Guided and interpreted tour of the Villar stream, at the foot of the Carpetanos Mountains, in which the vegetation, fauna and old traditional practices of this interesting corner of the mountainous municipality of Lozoya were made known.
It was organized by the El Cuadrón Environmental Education Center.
Guided tour of El Parapeto (Piñuécar-Gandullas)
During the guided tour of El Parapeto, different positions in the area and remnants of the Spanish civil war integrated into the national heritage of historical and cultural interest were visited.
It was organized by the Piñuécar-Gandullas City Council and El Parapeto de Gandullas Association.
Guided visit to the Francoist penal detachment of Bustarviejo
It was carried out on foot along a dirt road, visiting the facilities of the best preserved detachment in Spain as well as the ruins of the houses of the relatives of the prisoners, in the Dehesa Vieja de Bustarviejo, and the construction works by the Madrid railway prisoners -Burgos.
It was organized by the Los Barracones and Bustarviejo City Council Association for Historical Memory.
