A walk through the streets of Madrid
8 monuments, 8 images, you need to keep forever
If your stay with us is going to be short, just a few hours or a single day, eight monuments and eight images that you must take with you as a souvenir of your visit. The best photograph? The one you do!
We start the walk in the historic Austrias neighborhood through one of the most emblematic and beautiful squares in Madrid and Spain, the Plaza Mayor. Porticoed square from the early seventeenth century that has been the scene of all kinds of celebrations and events for more than 400 years: jousts and tournaments, bullfights, sacramental cars, theatrical performances, carnivals, executions, markets and markets.
Next to the Royal Palace of Madrid we arrive at the beautiful and monumental Plaza de Oriente. Did you know that more than a hundred large statues decorated the balustrade, facades and cornices of the Palace? Currently both in the pedestrian neoclassical square and in the artistic and magnificent gardens that surround it, part of these large stone figures of the Spanish kings can be seen. A must-see on your visit to Madrid!
We cannot leave the Plaza de Oriente without mentioning the Teatro Real, an elegant neoclassical building that closes the splendid and grandiose complex. More than two centuries of history and music and 65.000 square meters that house many unique spaces, corners and luxurious rooms that can be visited in different guided tours: general, artistic, technical, night or school. The Madrid Coliseum is one of the most important opera houses in Europe.
Very close to Puerta del Sol, on Calle de Alcalá, if you look up at the sky you will be able to contemplate two of the colossal sculptural ensembles that go unnoticed when walking, the two 25-ton chariots of the Alcalá building, 16, the former headquarters of the Bank of Bilbao in Madrid. One of the icons of the city and one of the pictures of the spectacular Madrid sunsets.
One of the most famous, representative and photographed historical monuments by locals and tourists, without a doubt, is the Puerta de Alcalá in Madrid. Did you know that after the Romans it was the first triumphal arch built in Europe? In the XNUMXth century it was one of the five royal gates to Madrid. In the Plaza de la Independencia next to the El Retiro Park, a symbol and a mandatory stop.
The Gran Vía
One of the main icons of Madrid and a must for all tourists. The street, which begins in Alcalá and ends in Plaza de España, since the 20s is a typical place for a walk for Madrilenians full of life: hotels, hostels, restaurants, bars, cafes, cocktail bars, comedy shows, magic, musicals , theaters, cinemas, shops, casinos, cafes, etc. A complete and unbeatable tourist offer.
At the corner of Calle Alcalá and Caballero de Gracia, continuing the walk through the streets of the center, a building whose facade appears on all postcards of the city. One of the buildings that attracts the most attention and is most photographed by tourists: the elegant Metropolis building. One of the first buildings on Gran Vía. Did you know that the dome is adorned with 30.000 pieces of 24-karat gold?
Night falls over Madrid, and before retiring to rest, a last and spectacular night scene to end the walk, the Royal Palace of Madrid and the Cathedral of La Almudena. From the Bridge of Segovia or from the viewpoint of the Temple of Debod, a classic.
Good night!
