MADRID31 "Studies of flesh and gesture"
Visual Arts Program 2024
La Alcalá 31 Hall Once again, it hosts Madrid31, a continuing artistic training program that is articulated through conferences and workshops with the aim of completing those aspects that are not specifically included in the academic programs linked to the arts and visual culture.
In the 2024 edition, under the title "Studies of flesh and gesture", we will take a journey that moves away from the terrain of appearances. We are going to leave the history of images where the history of the body has normally been created to penetrate the depth that makes it up.
During the sessions we will reflect on shapes, superstitions, desires, fear, whims, emotions and sensations through the personal vision of Mercedes Azpilicueta, June Crespo, Niño de Elche, Sahatsa Jauregi, Isabel de Naverán and Albert Serra, chosen because of the relationship of the topic with his work and research. With all of them we are going to claim and resort to a thought and a way of learning and teaching based on individual stories, obsessions, experimentalism and stylistic diversity to detect other realities around the body that go beyond the look and the skin.
All workshops begin with a conference open to the general public in the auditorium of the Sala Alcalá 31 of the Community of Madrid, and continue with two days of workshop, which will take place in the spaces of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in the morning, and for which it is necessary to reserve in advance.

In the artist's words: "Voices can be found not only in the oral cavity, but the vocal also belongs to other parts of the body and to the space we inhabit. The singer's hand is the hand that shapes breathing itself, breaths of air carved with each beat of the diaphragm. Giving body to voices or giving voices to bodies is to understand ourselves as mediation and not as an end. Thinking from these premises will lead us to understand hands as conduction, autobiographical map, recognition of the other, touching the auditory membrane of the other with voices, caressing language and feeling welcomed by it.
P.S.: Attention! I have not used the verb "sing."
Welcome"

To make a good axe, you need to be a deep connoisseur of the original technology of blacksmithing, based on knowledge that combines geometry with alchemy. You need to know how to listen to the roasting of the charcoal and move with agility between the anvil and the fire. You need to strike the steel with precision and bathe it in warm water before it becomes brittle.
During the talk that will take place on September 19th in the auditorium of the Sala Alcalá 31 we will be the magician in the tarot and in the center of the table we will place an axe. An axe that will be used both to cut wood and to cut up meat and/or win competitions. We will launch vanishing points that will cover some perversions of the tool, converted for us into a friendly souvenir, terrifying monument, cultural record or why not, in a catchy song.
In the workshop, which will take place on September 19 and 20, we will take a tour of the shifts that have guided Sahatsa Jauregi's artistic practice in recent years and will divide it between practice and theory. First, practice in four phases, then theory and the embodiment of what we have seen, heard and spoken:
From object to photo
From photo to sculpture
From sculpture to the body
From the body to space
