Women played a fundamental role in XNUMXth century literature despite not having the same possibilities as men, and yes, with many added difficulties, greater the closer we get to the beginning of this stage.
Some, paying the costs of a tremendous struggle, managed to stand out in their time; Others did not have the same luck and, despite fruitful work, remained in oblivion to be rescued much later and to do them justice, and there will surely be those that still remain in the shadows.
This temporary exhibition was a tribute to this outstanding work, having developed different literary careers that have enriched Hispanic and world culture.
Through photographs, letters, personal objects, books and other documents, the selected authors showed the traces left by them, women who created their own universe using words as an instrument. Each one tells a different story, but despite this, it is always about overcoming adversity and not giving up. Most of them, even in times when communication was not as fluid as it is today, were aware of the value of a common language in twenty countries, and they maintained a network of communication between them regardless of their nationality. They all shared the same language, a love of literature and their status as women.

This exhibition reviewed the career of one of the best exponents of Spanish photography in the second half of the 20th century, Francisco Ontañón, both from a professional perspective and from an author's profile.
“Craft and Creation” brought these two worlds together and brought them into dialogue from a double context, one that refers to the photographic panorama of the period and the other that connects his production with visual culture and the consumption and circulation of images. His professional activity covered practically all fields, themes and specialties that can be imagined, and he always did so by contributing creativity and innovation.
Also related to the world of books, a prominent place in his career was occupied in the 70s by his collaboration with Daniel Gil on the legendary Alianza Editorial El libro de bolsillo collection, and also at Alianza Universidad, giving photographic form to the designer's creations for the covers of publications.
He also worked, since the end of the 60s, in an underdeveloped genre such as animal photography, collaborating intensely with Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente on those animal collectibles that had such an impact and diffusion at the time. But if there is an area in which he stands out, for his creativity, for the stylistic renewal he brought and for his ability to capture the spirit of the time, it is in the extensive work he did for the covers of record companies such as Hispavox, CBS and RCA. for more than a decade, especially between 1965 and 1975.

The pictorial and portrait typology of women is part of Francisco de Goya's artistic production. Few artists have been able to move away from the idea of women as a stagnant muse in order to represent them in different facets.
He was able to capture the complexity of the situation of women in his time from a critical point of view that contrasts with other authors of the eighteenth century. As a good Frenchified, Goya followed the intellectual currents of the neighboring country and, above all, he was influenced by Diderot's thought on the feminine.
In this temporary exhibition, you can see different female models “immortalised” at a time in history when women lacked the recognised position they currently have in society, from Agustina de Aragón, the bullfighter known as “la Pajuelera”, majas, to prostitutes. These engravings are part of three large series that he produced between 1799 and 1824: Los caprichos, Los desastres de la guerra and Los disparates o Proverbios, all of which are an unrivalled chronicle of the era that mirror the image of a woman who, at times, stands out as the protagonist, or is placed in the background, and at other times we only glimpse her through metaphorical resources.

The exhibition "Mediterranean" showed one of the best photographic series by Martin Parr, prestigious British photographer of the Magnum Agency, who surprises us with absurd moments and extravagant traditions of life on the beaches of the Mediterranean. Despite the controversy and criticism that his first works aroused, he is considered one of the architects of the revitalization of documentary and social photography, which has led him to be one of the most innovative and influential photographers on the artistic scene.
His international career began with his famous 1986 book, The Last Resort, which represented the seaside resort of New Brighton, near Liverpool. Since then, his obsession with the beach has spread throughout the world, and this exhibition compiles the photographs he took in the 90s in our country. In 1994 he became a member of the Magnum agency, after a heated debate over his provocative photographic style.
In 2002, the Barbican Art Gallery and the National Media Museum presented a complete retrospective of his work that traveled to the great European museums, including the Reina Sofía National Art Museum in Madrid.

2021 was postulated as the year in which the commemoration of three of the road movies (road movies) in the history of cinema: the 80th anniversary of Sullivan's Travels (1941), the 50th anniversary of Two-Lane Road (1971) and the 30th anniversary of Thelma and Louise (1991). Also converging is the 120th anniversary of the birth of the Oldsmobile Curved Dash (1901), considered the first mass-produced vehicle in history. Using these onomastics as a pretext, an exhibition was put together that revolves around the car but, above all, around the link between vehicle, driver and environment. In addition, the concepts of control, movement, speed and time are examined, non-verbal communication mechanisms are scrutinised and the swings between the public and the private and between the individual and the collective are analysed.
The exhibition brought together works from the collection of the Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo. We were able to see very powerful works by Andrew Bush, Alberto García-Alix, Pilar Albarracín, el Roto and up to 15 artists whose common link is the car or another type of vehicle.

The exhibition Marilyn Monroe: 50 Sittings by Milton H. Greene presented a selection of iconic images of the American actress Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962), belonging to 50 photo sessions taken by the legendary fashion and film photographer, the New Yorker Milton H. Greene (1922-1985). Produced by the H. Greene archives in collaboration with the Filmoteca de Catalunya, it offered a unique opportunity to discover the versatility of the actress and the human being away from the spotlight in different environments: breaks from filming, in the studio, in private, even photographs of her wedding with the playwright Arthur Miller.
Milton H. Greene first photographed Marilyn in 1953, became her friend and confidante, and they created the film production company Marilyn Monroe Productions. He enjoyed exceptional access to the actress and her wish was to break the sex symbol stereotype of her.
The 50 sessions, carried out in the golden years of the actress's career, show a radiant and natural Marilyn and reveal a little-known turning point: the moment when Monroe began to control both aspects, her image and her life. .
The exhibition photographs were printed on Innova Fine Art Exhibition Baryta paper using a Canon Pro 4000/6000 pigment ink printer.

This exhibition on José Moreno Villa (Málaga, 1887 - Mexico City, 1955), produced with the funds of the Residencia de Estudiantes, offered a visual and graphic tour of the figure and work of a unique figure within the various literary and artistic movements that took place in Spain in the first third of the XNUMXth century and, at the same time, brings us closer to the charismatic Spanish intellectual who managed to integrate into the Mexican cultural world by undertaking a long and definitive exile.
Through oil paintings, drawings, photographs, and books, the exhibition introduced us to the different stages of a man who knew how to combine study with creation, whether through his work as an art historian, practicing, through his painting, and disseminating, through his writings, the new artistic currents of the European avant-garde. Furthermore, it introduced us to a poet who knew how to break with the modernist tradition and foreshadow the path followed by the new Spanish poetry of the so-called Generation of '27, into which he would eventually become fully integrated. And to a man who, while living at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid as a tutor and assistant director, was able to establish deep bonds of friendship with the most prominent members of the new generation—Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí, and Federico García Lorca, among others—with whom he participated and participated in the many cultural adventures that have come to be known as the Silver Age of XNUMXth-century Spain.
The exhibition also explored the new intellectual and artistic paths he pursued during his exile, which ultimately transformed him into a person completely embedded in the cultural life of Mexico during those years, a figure where his life is still remembered today.

Did you know that more than five hundred westerns were filmed in Europe, and of these, more than two hundred in the Community of Madrid? A figure that exceeds the number of films of this genre in other areas of Spain that are traditionally associated with this phenomenon.
There is a collective fascination with the icons and elements of the Far West, with stagecoaches, hats, smocks, ponchos and feather headdresses. Although not part of our culture, the history of the second decade of the 19th century in the United States and the construction of the territory of the West is familiar to us through cinema. A film that was also shot in the capital and towns of the current Community of Madrid, by American, national and European companies.
Thanks to the Anglo-Saxon film shoots that landed in Madrid, and the birth and rise of the western produced in Europe, a unique economic activity developed in our region. In Colmenar Viejo, the set for the first town in Western Europe was built. In Hoyo de Manzanares, the first established western town in Europe was built, and “A Fistful of Dollars” was filmed there, and the Eurowestern phenomenon began.
This exhibition revealed the main sites in the Community of Madrid where filmmakers and artists such as Sergio Leone, Robert Siodmak, Raoul Walsh, Richard Fleischer, Robert Mitchum, Charles Bronson, Lee Van Cleef, Robert Shaw, Alain Delon, Tom Berenguer and Lee Marvin worked. It also revealed how actors such as William Shatner, Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, who drove a stagecoach in Madrid's El Retiro Park, made their debut.

This temporary exhibition presented the impact of the incorporation of technology into the home due to the increasing availability of electricity. A visit to our recent everyday history among refrigerators, cookers, mixers, kettles, toasters, stoves, washing machines, irons, vacuum cleaners, record players, radios, televisions, telephones... all pieces belonging to the Alfaro Hofmann Collection.
The chronological overview of the pieces allowed us to appreciate the rapid technological evolution they have undergone and, at the same time, the importance that design has acquired over time until becoming, above utility, its main attraction.
"The Mechanization of the Home" was organized for decades and focused on three underlying themes: electricity as a new source of energy that revolutionizes the entire domestic sphere, the industry that is incorporated into the manufacture of household appliances through research and design, and women as the main user and consumer of these appliances.
